Course Description

Economics - A Level (Standard or Fast Track)

We provide a wide range of A Levels, you are sure to find something to suit your needs and interests.

An A Level in Economics is the ideal qualification for people who would like to gain a better understanding of the subject, which will allow them to progress on to higher education at university. It also enables a progression route for individuals to complete further training whilst in employment.

This course covers the new 2015 specification. As a result of the updated specification the first opportunity you will have to complete the exam for this course will be June 2017.

The following specification has been created to:
  • Develop an interest in economics and its involvement to the wider economic and social environment

  • Develop an understanding of a variety of models and concepts, as well as gain the ability to use these concepts in a variety of different settings

  • Develop an enquiring, critical ‘economist’s mind’

  • Practice skills, qualities and attitudes, which will prepare them for the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities of adult working life

  • Develop an understanding of current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect life on a daily basis

  • Apply economic concepts and the theories in a range of settings and appreciate their values and restrictions in explaining real world phenomena

  • Analyse and explain the strengths and weaknesses of the market economy and the role of government within it


The Edexcel A Level Economics specification is structured into four units, assessed across three examinations. This course has been designed to reflect this, and will take students through each topic, as listed below:

Module 1: Introduction to markets and market failure

This module focuses on microeconomic concepts. Learners will develop an understanding of:
- Nature of economics
- How markets work
- Market failure
- Government intervention

Module 2: The UK economy – performance and policies

This module focuses on macroeconomic concepts. Learners will develop an understanding of:
- Measures of economic performance
- Aggregate demand
- Aggregate supply
- National income
- Economic growth
- Macroeconomic objectives and policy

Module 3: Business behaviour and the labour market

This module develops the microeconomic concepts introduced in module 1 and focuses on business economics. Learners will develop an understanding of:
- Business growth
- Business objectives
- Revenues, costs and profits
- Market structures
- Labour market
- Government intervention

Module 4: A global perspective

This module develops the macroeconomic concepts introduced in module 2 and applies these concepts in a global context. Learners will develop an understanding of:
- International economics
- Poverty and inequality
- Emerging and developing economies
- The financial sector
- Role of the state in the macroeconomy

No Previous Knowledge Required

There is no previous learning knowledge required to enrol on to this course, however it is desirable for the learner to have basic knowledege of Economics.

It is highly recommended that learners have gained GCSEs or the equivalent communication and literacy skills in English and also numeracy in mathematics.  

12 Months Tutor Support

Students will receive a study guide on enrolment, which will guide you through the assessment process. 

This course is provided as a paper based pack. You will also be assigned a personal tutor who will be on hand to answer any questions or queries you may have throughout the duration of the programme (via mail or email). 

Students completing their A Levels will have access to tutor support for 18 months.



To achieve the Economic A Level, students will be required to complete a series of assignments, which will be reviewed and marked by your tutor. Learners will be required to sit the examinations at an Edexcel centre. We will provide you with a list of centre locations in your course pack.
