Course Description

Environmental Studies - A Level (Standard or Fast Track)

Do you require an A-Level qualification in 12 months to gain access to higher education at university?

We provide a range of A-Level courses which will provide you with all the necessary learning knowledge needed to progress on to higher education or further training. We make it our priority to mark your work as quickly as possible, so you are fully prepared to take your examinations in June each year. 

An Advanced Level in Environmental Studies is the ideal qualification for people who would like to develop their understanding of this subject.

Please Note:

Due to legislation changes in some A Level specifications, the last opportunity to you will have to sit the exam on this course is June 2016.

We will be updating our A Level courses, to meet with the new specification in due course. Once these courses are released the first opportunity you will have to complete these exams will be June 2017.

Students will be required to study four units including:

AS Level

This specification develops a foundation of knowledge, understanding, and the skills that are related to the environment and how it operates.  Students will look at the biodiversity of life on Planet Earth, and Physical resources that are crucial for lie on Earth:

Unit 1: ENVS1 The Living Environment (written examination: 1 hour)

Unit 2: ENVS2 The Physical Environment (written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes)

 

A2 Level 

This specification will allow students to develop and improve their skills and knowledge of ‘How Science Works’. Learners will investigate Energy Resources, Environmental Pollution, Biological Resources and Sustainability:

Unit 3: ENVS3 Energy Resources and Environmental Pollution (written examination: 1 hours 30 minutes)

Unit 4: ENVS4 Biological Resources and Sustainability (written examination: 2 hours)

 

Course Content

Unit 1: The Living Environment

An introduction to the biodiversity of life on Planet Earth.

Unit 2: The Physical Environment

Physical resources for example atmospheric gases, mineral nutrients and also water are vital for life on Earth. Humans manage physical resources to provide higher material living standards. The use of many of these resources is unsustainable.

Unit 3: Energy Resources and Environmental Pollution

This unit will look at the future problems of energy supply and how these may be resolved and looked at through the study of the availability of energy resources. 

Unit 4: Biological Resources and Sustainability

This section will discuss the factors that control human population growth, which take into account the demands placed on the planets resources and also life-support systems. 

How Science Works

Students are required to have an understanding of How Science Works. This is the underpinning set of concepts which enable students to understand how scientists examine phenomena in their attempts to provide explanation about the world. How Science Works highlights the involvement scientists have made to their own disciplines.

To achieve a full A-Level, students are required to successfully complete assignments and examinations for both AS and A2 Level.

 

No Previous Knowledge Required

This programme will develop the knowledge obtained in a range of GCSE science subjects. This includes GCSE Environmental Studies, this qualification is not essential to start the A-Level course. 

Students would find it beneficial to have some knowledge of biology or other related subjects.

12 Months Tutor Support

Students will receive a course manual and a study guide on enrolment. Students will be assigned a personal tutor who will be on hand to answer any questions or queries you may have throughout the duration of the programme (via mail or email). Learners will also be able to access our student help desk who are available to provide any practical advice you may require throughout your studies (via email or telephone). When studying our A-Levels you will be able to access 18 months tutor support.

 

Assessment

To achieve the English Language and Literature A-Level qualification, students will be required to complete several assignments. Your personal tutor will review and mark your work. Learners only need to send the assignments to your tutor. You do not need to submit your self-assessment activities and exercises, as they are for you to monitor your personal progress. 

Students are required to sit examinations at an AQA centre. We provide learners with a list of centres within your course pack.

The Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA) has a well-known reputation for promoting education for the benefit of the public. AQA is the largest examination board in the United Kingdom awarding 49 % of full course GCSEs and 42% of A-levels on a national level. There are approximately 3.5 million examinations taken with AQA every year, including public exams such as GCSEs and A-levels and other qualifications.
