Course Description

Geography - A Level (Standard or Fast Track)

Need to achieve an A Level within 12 months? This is the ideal programme for learners to gain access in to higher education at University.

We make it our priority to mark your work as quickly as possible, so you are fully prepared to sit your examinations in June of each year.

An Advanced Level in Geography is a suitable qualification for individuals who would like to develop their learning knowledge of this subject.

 Please Note:

Due to legislation changes in some A Level specifications, the last opportunity to you will have to sit the exam on this course is June 2016.

We will be updating our A Level courses, to meet with the new specification in due course. Once these courses are released the first opportunity you will have to complete these exams will be June 2017.

Such understanding can allow students to progress on to higher education or possibly further training whilst working. 

The course specification has been created to:

  • Develop the knowledge gained at GCSE level, with minimal repetition of content and to develop fieldwork skills

  • Increase choice of topics, for example between fieldwork investigation or issue evaluation papers

  • Stimulate and encourage the study of geographical issues

  • Offer a smooth route to progress on to higher education and employment

Students will study the following four units:

 

AS Level  

Unit 1: GEOG1 Physical and Human Geography (written examination: 2 hours)

Unit 2: GEOG2 Geographical Skills (written examination: 1 hour)

 

A2 Level

Unit 3: GEOG3 Contemporary Geographical Issues (written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes)

Unit 4 either:

GEO4A: Geography Fieldwork Investigation, or

GEO4B: Geographical Issue Evaluation 

Course Content

AS Level

Unit 1 Physical and Human Geography 

This unit involves the study of the key geographical concepts, along with contrasting themes of modern or environmental impact, management and also sustainability. 

Unit 2 Geographical Skills

A geographical skills paper based on the content of Unit 1. Appropriate skills include: investigative, ICT, and also Statistic skills. 

 

A2 Level

Unit 3 Contemporary Geographical Issues

This section will investigate an issues-based approach to contemporary geographical themes.

Unit 4A Geography Field Work Investigation

This course gives students the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of the subject content in greater detail of the fieldwork study. Students will go on to analyse and evaluate their research in response to the questions set. Learners will be assessed on fieldwork skills. 

Or unit 4B Geographical Issue Evaluation

This section will provide students with the chance to put their analysis, synthesis, and also evaluation skills to good use. 

You will receive an advanced information booklet which will be released 2 months before the examination. This will give students sufficient time to conduct research into the topic area.

To achieve the full A-Level, students will be required to successfully complete assignments and examinations for both AS and A2 Level. 

 

No Previous Knowledge Required

Students will need to have basic English reading and writing skills. It is highly recommended that learners gain the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills that are the equivalent to GCSE level.

  • Unit 1 – GEOG1 Physical and Human Geography

  • Unit 2 – GEOG2 Geographical Skills

  • Unit 3 – GEOG3 Contemporary Geographical Issues

  • Unit 4 – GEO4A Geography Field Work Investigation OR GEO4B Geographical Issue Evaluation

 

12 Months Tutor Support

Students will receive a course manual and a study guide on enrolment. Students will be assigned a personal tutor who will be on hand to answer any questions or queries you may have, throughout the duration of the programme (via mail or email). Learners will also be able to access our student help desk who are available to provide any practical advice you may require throughout your studies (via email or telephone). When studying our A-Levels you will be able to access 18 months tutor support.

 

Assessment

To achieve the Geography A-Level qualification, students will be required to have several assignments. Your personal tutor will review and mark your work. Learners only need to send the assignments to their tutor. You do not need to submit your self-assessment activities and exercises, as they are for you to monitor your personal progress. 

Students are required to sit examinations at an AQA centre. We provide learners with a list of centres within your course pack.

AQA is the largest examination board in the United Kingdom awarding 49 % of full course GCSEs and 42% of A-levels on a national level.
