Course Description

Government and Politics - A Level (Standard or Fast Track)

Need to achieve an A Level within 12 months? This is the ideal programme for learners to gain access into higher education at University.

We make it our priority to mark your work as quickly as possible, so you are fully prepared to sit your examinations in June of each year.

An Advanced Level in Government and Politics is a suitable qualification for individuals who would like to develop their learning knowledge of this subject. Such understanding can allow students to progress on to higher education or possibly further training whilst working. 

Please Note:

Due to legislation changes in some A Level specifications, the last opportunity to you will have to sit the exam on this course is June 2016.

We will be updating our A Level courses, to meet with the new specification in due course. Once these courses are released the first opportunity you will have to complete these exams will be June 2017.

This specification has been created to:

  • Develop their critical thinking skills and the ability to interpret and evaluate information

  • Develop a critical awareness of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and also processes

  • Gain knowledge and understanding of the structures of authority within the political system of the UK and how these may differ from those of other political systems.

  • Gain knowledge and informed understanding of the rights and responsibilities of the individual

  • Develop an interest of contemporary politics

Students will be required to study the following four units:

AS Level

  • Unit 1: GOVP1 People, Politics and Participation (written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes)

  • Unit 2: GOVP2 Governing Modern Britain (written examination 1 hour 30 minutes)

A2 Level

  • Unit 3: GOV3A – The Politics of the USA (written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes)

  • Unit 4: GOV4A – The Government of the USA (written examination 1 hour 30 minutes)

Unit 3 The Politics of the USA

  • The electoral process and direct democracy

  • Political parties

  • Voting behaviour

  • Pressure groups

Unit 4 The Government of the USA

  • The constitutional framework of the US government

  • The legislative branch of government: US Congress

  • The executive branch of government

  • The judicial branch of government: the supreme court

To achieve a full A-Level, students are required to successfully complete assignments and examinations for both the AS and A2 Level.

 

No Previous Knowledge Required

Students will be required to have a basic level of English reading and writing skills.

12 Months Tutor Support

Students will receive a course manual and a study guide on enrolment. Students will be assigned a personal tutor who will be on hand to answer any questions or queries you may have, throughout the duration of the programme (via mail or email). Learners will also be able to access are student help desk who are available to provide any practical advice you may require throughout your studies (via email or telephone). When studying our A-Levels you will be able to access 18 months tutor support.

 

Assessment

To achieve the Government and Politics A-Level qualification, students will be required to have several assignments. Your personal tutor will review and mark your work. Learners only need to send the assignments to your tutor. You do not need to submit your self-assessment activities and exercises, as they are for you to monitor your personal progress. 

Students are required to sit examinations at an AQA centre. We provide learners with a list of centres within your course pack.

The Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA) has a well-known reputation for promoting education for the benefit of the public. AQA is the largest examination board in the United Kingdom awarding 49 % of full course GCSEs and 42% of A-levels on a national level.
