Course Description

History - A Level (Standard or Fast Track)

This is the ideal programme for learners to gain access in to higher education at University.

We make it our priority to mark your work as quickly as possible, so you are fully prepared to sit your examinations in June of each year.

An Advanced Level in History is a suitable qualification for individuals who would like to develop their learning knowledge of this subject.

Such understanding can allow students to progress on to higher education or possibly further training whilst working. 

Our A level courses come with 18 months tutor support, which means you can complete your A level at a pace which suits you.

This course covers the new 2015 specification. As a result of the updated specification the first opportunity you will have to complete the exam for this course will be June 2017.

This specification has been created to:

  • Promote and encourage understanding of the past and the value of historical study

  • Allow greater freedom at AS by offering a considerable British element at A2

  • Provide depth of study in a consistent programme

  • Develop skills for further education and work

Students will be required to study the following four units: 

AS Level

Unit 1: AS Level Unit One: HIS1D: Britain 1603-1642

Change and Consolidation (written examination 1 hour 15 minutes)

Unit 2: AS Level Unit Two: HIS20: The Impact of Chairman Mao: China 1946-1976 (written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes)


A2 Level

Unit 3: A2 Level Unit Three: HIS3J: The State and People: Britain, 1918-1964 (written examination 1 hour 30 minutes)

Unit 4: A2 Level Unit Four (coursework option): HIS4X: Totalitarian Ideology in Theory and Practice, c1848-c1941 (broadly covering the required 100 years)


Course Content

Unit 1 Change and Consolidation – Britain, 1603-1642 (written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes)

This section will encourage the understanding of change over time, of at least 50 years. It focuses on how governments establish themselves and also react to the need for change. 

The learner will develop and improve a stronger sense of historical perspective and also understand the relationships between the characteristics and also the key feature of the period of study.

Unit 2 Historical Issues: Periods of Change – The Impact of Chairman Mao: China, 1946-1976

This unit will encourage and promote the in depth study of important periods of history. Learners will also gain an understanding of the complexity of historical process is established.

Unit 3 The State and the People – Change and Continuity – Britain 1918-1964

This section will provide students with an understanding of change and continuity over approximately 50 years. Learners will investigate and explore the state and the people. This module will also assist students in understanding how issues for example the impact of religious belief, has interacted with other issues in a short period of time. You will them look at how this particular issue has changed in significance over the 50 year period. 

Unit 4 Historical Enquiry – Totalitarian Ideology in Theory and in Practice, c1848-c1941

Learners will need to submit a Historical Enquiry, which will be based on the investigation of a historical issue. This issue should be in depth and cover a period of 100 years. 

To achieve a full A Level, students will be required to successfully complete assignments and examinations for both AS and A2 level. 


No Previous Knowledge Required

Learners will be required to have basic understanding of English reading and writing skills. It is highly recommended that learners have gained the skills associated with GCSE History or equivalent.

To start our A-Level programmes, it is recommended that you should have a GCSE graded C or higher.

12 Months Tutor Support

Students will receive a course manual and a study guide on enrolment. Students will be assigned a personal tutor who will be on hand to answer any questions or queries you may have, throughout the duration of the programme (via mail or email). Learners will also be able to access our student help desk who are available to provide any practical advice you may require throughout your studies (via email or telephone). When studying our A-Levels you will be able to access 18 months tutor support.



To achieve the History A-Level qualification, students will be required to complete several assignments. Your personal tutor will review and mark your work. Learners only need to send assignments to their tutor. You do not need to submit your self-assessment activities and exercises, as they are for you to monitor your personal progress.
