Course Description

Safeguarding Children & Young People - Level 2 ABC Award

Our Level 2 Safeguarding children and young people award is a suitable course for individuals who work with children and young people and are in need of specific training in this field.

A child can be described as a young person who is in between the stages of infancy and youth. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) describes a child as being an individual ages between 0-18 years of age. Within British Criminal Law a child is thought to be an individual who is up to 14 years of age. They can be convicted of an offence from the age of 10. A young person can be defined as an individual who is in the early stages of life, growth or development (between the ages of 14-19).

A person’s development is determined by several factors such as environmental and genetic. Students will look at such factors, if they are negative, this will then affect the individual’s development.

From the implementation of the Every Child Matters agenda, the term ‘Safeguarding’ has been put in place of ‘Child Protection’. It is the duty of all professionals who are in contact with, and work with children. This can include parenting workers, and care assistants who are responsible for the care of children, and to protect a child’s physical and emotional well-being, to make sure children are not being neglected.

It is often the case that children can be harmed in several ways, which are not always obvious to an outsider.

Children and young people can be harmed by a range of aspects:

  • People

  • Health issues

  • Injuries

  • Accidents

  • Environment
