Course Description

Proofreading Course - Level 4 Diploma

Our Proofreading Diploma will enable learners to gain a background understanding of Proofreading, copy-editing and also publishing.

This is the ideal course for learners who would like to undertake proofreading on a professional level or simply develop and improve their knowledge and understanding. 

Our Level 4 Proofreading course will enable students to achieve a certificate (accreditation from the NCFE) upon successful completion of the assignments.

Learners will be required to study the eight modules, all of which involve instructional learning materials and also assignments. 

Chapter 1 will look at the distinction between copy-editors and also proof readers. It will give students an insight into the symbols used when marking hard copy, as well as the procedures to follow when marking an electronic copy. 

Chapters 2, 3, and 4 will provide an overview of basic grammar.   

Students will learn how to recognise and highlight the basic parts of speech and will also learn how to resolve common grammatical problems.   

Chapter 2: will provide information on nouns, and pronouns.

Chapter 3: looks at verbs and other parts of speech

Chapter 4: covers clauses and sentences

Chapter 5: looks at punctuation, which cover the use of apostrophe, comma, quotation mark, semicolon, and other highly recognised forms of punctuation.

Chapter 6: discusses common problems that the proof reader is likely to face related to the choice of vocabulary and ends with a comparison of differing practices in British and American English.

Chapter 7: looks at the common problems that can arise at the phrase or clause level. This includes the split infinitive, and also provides advice for solution to these problems. 

Chapter 8: examines the function of a style sheet, including addresses page, layout and other formatting issues that can affect the look of an entire text.

This course materials of this diploma also include Appendix I, which is a glossary of grammatical terms, Appendix II, which is a list of standard symbols used in proofreading, and also a bibliography listing.
