Course Description

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and the Criminal Justice System - Level 3

This course requires you to have some previous knowledge of FASD, and also an understanding of both primary and secondary disabilities caused by FASD. During this course we will only use the term FASD, the learner should still consider ARND and also ARBD as being related issues. These three terms involves a range of different effects on an individual including physical, behavioural, mental and also learning difficulties. Each effect has the potential to have lifelong implications to the individual.

This programme investigates the secondary behaviours related with FASD. This can result in the individual being more likely to break the law compared to an individual who is unaffected by FASD. Students will develop their ability to assist individuals through the court and trial procedures. Not only this, learners will examine the necessary requirements that are needed in order to achieve successful management of FASD within the court system.

This programme will provide students with a nationally approved certificated course that investigates a variety of implications, and problems caused as a result of alcohol use during pregnancy, as well as the predisposition to criminal behaviour of a person with this disorder. Learners will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of this subject area. Each module will have its own learning outcomes in which state the aims of the programme. Such learning outcomes investigate a range of areas regarding criminal behaviour, how to support and assist individuals throughout the court and trial procedures, as well as the requirements needed to successfully manage FASD within the court system.

Specific objectives are listed as learning outcomes at the start of each of the three modules of the course.
