Course Description

Geography - IGCSE

The aim of this programme is to enable students to develop a greater understanding of places, including local, regional, national, and also areas on a global level. Learners will also improve their knowledge of the different processes regarding the development of the physical and human environments. Not only this, learners can expect to investigate a range of communities that exist around the globe, as well as the different opportunities and restrictions involved in such environments. You will have the opportunity to explore the spatial effects involved in the ways in which individuals interact with each other and the environment.

Our IGCSE Geography course includes a variety of activities and Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs) for self-assessment. They have been created to assist your learning. Your personal tutor will review, mark and also provide you with feedback on your work. Please note: such assessments have no influence over your final grade.

There are three key assessment objectives covered in this course including:

AO1 Knowledge with understanding

AO2 Skills and analysis

AO3 Judgement and decision making

Paper 1 (Exam – 1 hour 45 minutes)

Paper one involves candidates answering three questions out of six. There are two questions which are based on each of the three themes discussed. The questions have been structured with levels of difficulty. Such questions give students the opportunity to produce free response writing, and also allow the student to problem solve.

Paper 2 (Exam – 1 hour 30 minutes)

Paper 2 requires candidates to answer all the questions, which are related to the interpretation and analysis of geographical information on the application of graphical and other techniques involved. The questions in this paper do not require students to have particular information of place. One question is based on a 1:25,000 or 1:50,000 to graphical map of a tropical area for example Zimbabwe or the Caribbean.

Paper 4 (1 hour 30 minutes)

Students are required to answer all the questions, completing a number of written tasks based on the three themes (see page 8). The questions involve an appreciation of a variety of techniques and methods used in fieldwork studies. The presentation, processing and analysis of data will be tested. These questions test the methodology of questionnaires, counts, measurement techniques and also observations, which can involve developing hypotheses appropriate to specific topics
