Course Description

English - IGCSE

Our IGCSE English course is only available to students whose native language is English. It is not suitable for learners whose mother tongue is an alternative language. For these learners, English is their second language. Even though here at eCertified Learning we do not provide a course for this specification, students can gain more information by visiting the Cambridge website: Cambridge International Examinations. This programme only explores the English Language and so there is no investigation of literature, even though there will be reference made to literacy texts and styles within the course. 

This programme has been designed and created for learners whom English is their mothers tongue. It is ideal for individuals who would like to learn and develop their ability to communicate in a clear and effective manner. Not only this, students will investigate speech and writing. Learners can expect to learn how to use a variety of vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and spelling in a method in which enables the student to develop an awareness of the audience targeted and being addressed. 

Learners will be encouraged to conduct a wide range of reading, in which will develop their knowledge and understanding of this subject area. Students will greaten their awareness with regards to the methods in which English can be utilised. It is also the ideal topic for individuals who would like to study English for their own enjoyment. This course will equip you with a general analysis and communication skills such as inference, order and present facts and opinions in an effective manner and also synthesis. 

The course title and code for this qualification is Cambridge IGCSE First Language English Syllabus code 0500.

This course will provide students with an overview of what is expected of you from the examination board (University of Cambridge). Students will need to arrange and register with the external centre in order to sit the examination. Upon successful completion of the administrative matter regarding examinations, students will be guided through the specification. We will then look at the proportion of marks within each of the examination papers.

Learners will then explore the grammatical and stylistic matters that often cause confusion for students, whether they have recently been in education or have been away from it a long time. Students will have the opportunity to complete a range of self-assessment exercises, in which will enable you to monitor and measure your personal progress, and to enable you to check you have understood the rules and standards in place.

There are a range of different styles of writing and a variety of techniques, which students can expect to study. You will complete practical and also written assignments, in which your personal tutor will review and provide you with feedback on your work. 

This course will assist students in exam preparation for papers 2 and 3. These written papers are the only papers you will be required to take in order to achieve an IGCSE. There is no coursework needed to complete this course. Students will be provided with a study guide which will help guide learners through the assessment process. Students will be required to look at a passage from a story or newspaper and from this learners will select and draw out the necessary information. When you get to the examination stage you will be writing well-constructed essays. The planning of your essays is a vital part in all areas of this course. Students will look in depth into the different requirements for the examination essays, as well as how to create and construct an appropriate answer. 

This programme has been created to help prepare students for the examinations. Students will learn about essay planning and will concentrate on a range of writing styles and vocabulary, which you will find of great benefit. Not only this, the course will provide learners with guidance on: spelling, paragraphing, nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. You will also explore punctuation rules, common errors, sentence structure and also the presentation of essays. 

The papers have the following structure:

Paper 2: Reading Passages (Extended)

2 hours

Candidates answer three questions on two passages of 600-700 words each, linked by a common theme. 

Eligible for Grades A*-E. 

50% of total marks – 40% on reading and 10% on writing.

Paper 3: Directed Writing and Composition

2 hours

50% of total marks – 10% on reading and 40% on writing.

The examinations are available in June and November each year. It is important that you make sure that your examination centre is able to handle your entry. It is also vital that you give yourself sufficient time to prepare for the examinations. You will receive 12 months tutor support, you may be able to extend this for an additional fee by your tutor.

The examinations take place in June and November each year. As we are not an examination centre it is vital that you take the time to read all the information in your course pack carefully. You need to be prepared to travel to an examination centre that is willing to accept external students.
