Course Description

Child Care and Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Diploma ABC Award

The Child Care Diploma will lead to a nationally-recognised Level 3 Award which has been approved by ABC.

This programme has been created to allow students to develop and improve their learning knowledge and understanding of childcare practices.

All students will receive 12 months tutor support from the date of their initial registration.

You can feel confident that your tutor will be available via email and mail as and when required. Support will also be available via our student help desk number if you have any generic questions.

This programme consists of the following topic areas:

  • The introduction to childcare practice

  • Childcare and child development (0-16)

  • The childcare practitioner

  • Planning to meet children’s individual needs

Our Child Care Diploma programme will allow learners to develop their knowledge and skills as well as meet the necessary requirements needed for basic training as part of the child minder registration/ application to be a child minder as well as to commence professional training.

The Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) course has been designed and created to allow individuals working, or wishing to work as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant. It will provide learners with all the necessary learning knowledge and skills needed to effectively fulfil this role.

This programme will guide students through a range of modules which are based around the professional standards for the HLTA status. HLTAs will be required to meet such criteria which has been set out for teachers, employers and parents to contribute to the pupils learning.

Please note: this course does not provide you with HLTA status, the course has been written alongside the 33 TDA standards and will present the supporting knowledge to progress in this area.

These standards consist of three parts including:

  • Professional attributes (standards 1-7) – these include the values and commitment that is expected of HLTAs.

  • Professional knowledge and understanding (standards 8-16) – these outline the knowledge and skills required by HLTAs to be able to work effectively with teachers in supporting learning.

  • Professional skills (standards 17-33) – these set out the expectations for monitoring, planning and also evaluating learning within the framework of supervision. Such guidance will be confirmed with the assigned teacher, and also approved by the head teacher of the school.

There is a range of questions that require a selection of responses which consist of descriptive answers as well as practical activities.  If at present you are working with children, the activities may be used to support you in your position.  If you are not currently working with children at the moment, you will notice that wherever possible the questions will allow you to provide an alternative means of answering them.

It may be an idea to approach the head of one of the schools in your local area. If you explain what you are doing, you may be able to gain an opportunity of work experience, through helping out on a voluntary basis.

The starting salary for a Teaching Assistant will be approximately £11,000 to £16,000 each year. A Higher Level Teaching Assistant can earn up to £18,000 per year. Once you are a fully qualified FE Teacher you can earn around 22,000-33,000 per annum.
