This programme will explore the interesting subject area of Forensic Science, which can be described as the application of science to law.

When it comes to investigating criminal cases, it is the role of the forensic scientist to examine any physical traces, which may be useful in establishing or dismissing an association between the crime scene and an individual who is suspected of committing a crime.

Forensic scientists often examine blood and other bodily fluids, hairs, footwear, fibres from clothing, tyre marks, and also flammable substances which may be used to start a fire, and much more!

A Forensic Scientist will look at the crime scene and compile evidence, they will also be able to provide advice on the likely sequence of events. Not only this, students will look at the key indicators, which will assist in identifying who the offender may be, and will join in the primary search for evidence.

Forensic scientists are responsible for identifying and analysing suspected drugs abuse and also specimens from individuals who are suspected of taking them or have been driving after the consumption of too much alcohol. Some forensic scientists will concentrate on the investigation of firearms, or explosives.

When it comes to the investigation of civil cases, forensic scientists will be involved in a similar sort of analysis. It will concentrate on solving any disputes that may arise for example; the cause of a road accident for which damages are being claimed. 

Forensic scientists can appear in both the prosecution or defence in a criminal affair, and defendant within a civil case. They have a tendency to present their findings in a written format as a report or a formal statement to present evidence. In some cases, the forensic scientist may be required visit court to show their evidence.

The evidence provided will support the case for either the defence or prosecution. The evidence gathered and presented by a forensic scientist is dependent on the rules of evidence and also the provision of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.
